Flat oval brown-tan scales (3-5mm) on undersides of leaves + along stems, sticky honeydew dripping onto floor or lower leaves, black sooty mould growing on the honeydew, leaf yellowing + drop in heavy infestations, ants attracted to honeydew.
Vein clearing, stem pitting, dwarfing.
Black slipper-shaped scales (the nymphal stage — very distinctive) on undersides of citrus leaves, copious honeydew + black sooty mould on leaves + fruit + ground beneath trees, leaf yellowing + premature drop, branch dieback in heavy infestations, fruit downgrade from cosmetic damage.
Adult beetles (3-4cm with long curved antennae) on trunks in summer, large round exit holes (1cm diameter) at base of trunks (the diagnostic symptom — distinguishes from native longhorns), sawdust at base of trees, branch dieback + crown decline, infested trees gradually killed.
