    How to tell them apart: Edema (oedema) is an abiotic disorder: on Ficus lyrata you see raised, water-soaked blisters or corky brown bumps on the leaf undersides and along veins, evenly distributed, with NO webbing and NO living organisms. It appears after over-watering, cool nights or low light when roots take up more water than the leaves release. Tetranychus urticae (two-spotted spider mite) instead causes fine pale-yellow stippling on the UPPER leaf surface, fading to bronzing, plus tiny moving dots and delicate fine webbing on leaf undersides and between stem and petiole. The decisive tells: webbing + stippling + crawling mites = spider mite; raised corky water-blisters with no webbing and no movement = edema.

    How to tell them apart: Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (anthracnose) produces sunken, slightly depressed dark-brown to black spots, often with a yellow halo, that start small and enlarge into irregular dead patches; on Ficus elastica the lesions are flush with or below the leaf surface and may later show tiny pinkish or black fruiting dots in the centre. Edema (oedema) instead produces raised, corky water-blisters that bulge OUTWARD, mainly on the leaf underside and along veins, starting as glassy translucent bumps that turn tan or brown and rough. Key test: run a fingertip across the spot — anthracnose is flat or pitted, edema is raised and bumpy. Edema appears in batches after overwatering or in cold, humid, low-light conditions and never spreads from leaf to leaf, whereas anthracnose spreads and worsens over time.

    How to tell them apart: Coccus hesperidum (brown soft scale) are LIVE insects: flat, oval, 3-4 mm yellow-brown to mottled-brown shells clustered along the midrib and main veins on the leaf underside. They exude sticky honeydew that makes leaves shiny and feeds black sooty mould, and ants patrol them; a scale lifts off cleanly with a fingernail to reveal a soft body underneath. Edema (oedema) is an abiotic disorder of overwatered, humid Ficus lyrata: cells burst and form raised, corky, tan-to-rust blisters and warty bumps, often in rows or scattered over the lower leaf surface and petioles. Edema scars are part of the leaf tissue — they do NOT scrape off, produce no honeydew, no sooty mould and attract no ants, and appear after wet/cool spells rather than spreading from plant to plant.

    How to tell them apart: Edema (oedema) is an abiotic disorder: its bumps are corky, tan-to-rust raised galls or blisters fused into the leaf tissue on the underside of Hoya carnosa, often in rows along veins, and they stay fixed and dry — wiping does nothing. Pseudococcus longispinus (longtailed mealybug) is a living insect: soft, pale, oval, segmented bodies that sit on the surface in leaf axils and along undersides, dusted with white mealy wax and bearing fine waxy tail filaments, and they smear or move when prodded. A telltale: mealybugs leave sticky honeydew and sooty mould plus white cotton, whereas edema produces no residue and worsens after overwatering in humid, low-light conditions.

  • Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV)

    How to tell them apart: Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) and edema (oedema) both leave Hoya carnosa leaves looking disordered with no visible insect or fungus, but the surfaces differ. CMV shows a flat mosaic of light and dark green patches, yellow mottling, ring spots and twisted or puckered new growth on the UPPER leaf surface — colour-based, systemic, and it spreads from leaf to leaf and worsens over time. Edema is purely physical: discrete raised corky tan-to-brown wart-like blisters, mostly on the leaf UNDERSIDE and along veins, that you can feel with a fingertip. Edema follows overwatering plus cool, humid, low-light spells and stops when watering is reduced, whereas CMV keeps progressing no matter how you water.
