overwatering / root + rhizome rot

abiotic_overwatering_sansevieria

Symptoms

Soft mushy leaf bases, leaves falling over from the soil line, yellowing from the bottom up, the rhizome (underground stem) feels squishy when pressed.

Plants affected

Easily confused with

  • cold damage

How to tell them apart: Both cold damage and overwatering on snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata) cause soft, mushy, water-soaked tan-brown collapsing tissue, so the mush itself is not diagnostic. Cold damage appears suddenly after a cold night or cold-window draft, starting at the leaf TIPS and exposed outer faces as translucent, scarred, sunken patches that later turn pale brown/tan and papery, while the soil and roots stay normal. Overwatering instead starts at the leaf BASE and soil line, where leaves go soft, yellow and floppy and pull away easily, with a foul rotten smell and dark slimy roots in soggy soil. Check the base and roots and recent temperatures: rot from the bottom in wet soil = overwatering; sudden tip/face damage after cold with dry healthy roots = cold injury.

  • oleander scale

How to tell them apart: Oleander scale (Aspidiotus nerii) shows discrete, raised, round 1-2 mm white-to-grey waxy caps crusted onto the firm green leaf faces and leaf bases of the aloe, each surrounded by a small localized yellow stipple or halo; the caps scrape off with a fingernail and the leaf tissue underneath stays firm. Overwatering / root + rhizome rot instead gives soft, mushy, water-soaked yellowing-to-brown that spreads diffusely from the base and lower leaves upward, with leaves collapsing or flopping at the soil line and the crown feeling squishy when pressed - no raised bumps, and the potting mix stays wet. So: firm leaf with scrape-off white dots and pinpoint yellow halos = scale; limp soft plant with base-up yellowing and soggy soil = overwatering.
